broken goods: fix it already!

i completed another one of lauren's projects today. (go here to find out who lovely and talented lauren is.) lauren's project this week was to fix all that broken stuff around your house that you keep ignoring month after month or even year after year. go here to see what lauren fixed. i chose to fix a table and lamp. both items reside in our guest room. the table was made by my father-in-law. it's walnut and is a reproduction of an antique that he saw in a friend's house. the lamp is an alabaster lamp that belonged to my grandparents.

here is the table and broken piece.

i used elmer's wood glue.

a little dab of glue...

...here...

...and there.

wipe off the mess. (sorry...bad bad picture.)

now for the lamp. the old shade was yuk. threw it away.

bought a new shade and harp at target.

removed old harp.

installed new harp.

put old finial back on. (someday i will get a prettier finial. this one is plastic. not that nice.)

voila! new lamp shade!

table and lamp fixed!

this little fix-it project took me all of ten minutes. i already had all of the supplies. it was just a matter of deciding to do it already! thanks again lauren for the motivation. i can't wait for next week's project!

blog goods: pure style home

lauren, from pure style home, featured me -or my closet, rather- on her blog today! her blog is one of my favorites. if you don't already know of her, you've got to go check out her blog. she is a fabulously talented designer. i love her home and her blog. for the past few weeks she has been completing small projects around her home and then posting about it. she is encouraging her readers to join her and send in photos of their projects. for the first project she organized her paint samples into mason jars, last week she re-organized her coat closet. remember my post on the shoe corner? well, i sent her the pics and link to my post and she loved it and posted about it today. check it out here.

here is lauren's closet after her re-do. i love the color and the matching wooden hangers.(i am a huge fan of painting closets.) i also love how she built the shelves in for the shoes.

here is my closet. i painted it when we painted the hall and kitchen. mr. bova built the peg boards. the shoe rack is from wal-mart. the wire shelves are ancient! they were in my bedroom when i was in jr. high! the blue bins inside the shelves are from target.

there are some other really great closets that lauren featured. this is one of my favorites. she used a harp box as a storage closet. so unique. love it!

lauren's project for this week is to fix something in your home that is broken. we all have stuff laying around that has been broken for months or even years. why don't we just fix them already? these kinds of projects usually only take minutes to complete yet we don't get around to them for months. i have a table with a broken leg that i'm going to fix. all it needs is a dab of wood glue. it's been sitting there broken since we moved into our house 3 years ago. i think it's about time to fix it. thanks for the motivation lauren!

kitchen goods: before and after from design*sponge

we've all seen these types of nightstands/end tables. you might even have one in your garage...sitting there without a purpose...you might have painted it white and then black and then used as a nightstand but then you got sick of it and it wasn't your "style" so you threw it out in the garage and can't figure out what to do with it...you might feel guilty getting rid of it because it was your brother's back when you were kids and if only you could figure out the perfect thing to do with it. if only someone would post a before and after on their blog of just the perfect thing to do......

isn't it perfect? this has got to be one of my favorite furniture before and afters. if only santa had seen this before christmas. this adorable play kitchen was featured on design*sponge a few days ago. what a brilliant idea!

food goods: ippudo in nyc

my wonderful friend jason, of linoto, took my sister-in-law, jane, and me to ippudo, in nyc, a few months ago. when he was telling me about it he described the pork as having "magic" in it. he was right. it quickly became my favorite meal of my entire life. i'm not sure what they are doing to that pork but it's nothing short of magic. when jane and i went back into the city the day after thanksgiving we knew we had to go back.
you can see the people lined up in the window. they are sitting in the bar area waiting for a table.

view up fourth ave.
best thing we ordered. steamed buns. (go ahead and laugh, we did too.)

delicious bowl of ramen.

view of the inside of the restaurant.

each time a new guest enters the dining area all of the workers yell out a greeting in japanese. i have no idea what they were saying but it made us feel really welcome. this restaurant is a blessing and a curse. i seriously don't know how i'm ever going to eat any where else in ny. mmmm...is it too early in the morning for steamed buns???

abc goods: abc carpet in nyc

we drove to nj over thanksgiving to visit family. the day after thanksgiving my sister-in-law and i went into the city. we only had time to make a couple of stops, one of which was abc carpet and home. i just love this store. there are 6, (or is it 7?) floors off interior design goodness. it is so much fun to let yourself get lost in this place. you truly need a few hours to experience the whole store. here are a few pictures i took of some of my favorite views. (i highly recommend clicking on the pictures to get the full size view. there are so many things to see...)

this is the entrance, doesn't it look magical?

view down broadway

beautiful window display

another view down broadway

the first thing i saw when i walked in. (this display reminded me that i am not crazy to have painted my master bedroom purple.)

these paper chandeliers were all over the store. i thought they were so beautiful.

after learning they were only $50, i couldn't leave without one. i haven't hung it yet. i'm thinking about putting it in our master bedroom.

i just love this dresser. i have a little table that i have been thinking about painting silver. i'm pretty sure this is silver leaf. whatever it is, it's stunning.

doesn't this bed look incredibly inviting?

i love the combination of the glitzy crystal chandelier and the rustic farm table.

tour goods: library and master...the last of the pictures!

here are the last of my pictures from the home tour. i have been posting these pictures since october. instead of listing all the links i will just stay that if you want to see them all, start with my october 31st post and read on. hopefully the next time i make it back to findlay i can get some more exterior photos of these amazing homes. the following are pictures from the library and master bedroom. enjoy!
library

this is the library, my favorite room in the whole house. the color is the same as the hall, benjamin moore's peacock feathers.

this cabinet is the first piece of furniture my mother ever bought at an auction. a memorable piece, for sure!

master

this is the master bedroom. it is one of the most dramatically changed rooms.

my mom and i both loved the magnolia leaves on the mantle. this was one of our favorite things that bev from beechwood florals did in the house for the tour.

this is the master bathroom. the white cabinets are original and the tile is original.

remember how i told you that this bathroom connected my parent's bedroom to mine? i am taking this picture from the doorway to my bedroom. see me in the mirror? green walls behind me? yep, that's my bedroom.

it has been so much fun sharing these pictures with you. it has been a lovely trip down memory lane commenting on the different rooms and such. i'm not sure how much longer my parent's will live in this house. it's a lot of work for two people. i think that it will be at least a few more years so that they can enjoy all of the hard work they have put into it over the past year. who knows...i have a sneaking suspicion that they may never be able to part with it. i feel so blessed to have grown up in this home and feel content knowing that it is now ready for the next chapter, whatever that may be!

second floor goods: two boys and a girl

elisabeth's room:
this is a view of my childhood bedroom from the upstairs hall.

there are two doors in the hall that leads to my bedroom. the first door goes to my bathroom and the second is my closet. the wall on the right used to be covered with teenagery things like pictures, notes from friends, postcards, buttons, posters...you name it!

when i was about 12 and outgrew my canopy bed my mom took me to an auction, and we bought this bed. i remember telling her i wanted "spindles". i fell in love with this bed and was so happy we won it.

the quilt on the bed was made by my great-grandmother. the colors inspired the green and pink room. during this recent remodel, my mom took down my pink-with-white-polka-dots wall paper and painted the walls green. the carpet was also pulled up and the wood floors were refinished. the curtains have been there since i was 6. i must say, i still like them!

the quilt hanging on the quilt rack was given to my parents as a wedding gift. the door to the right of the quilt rack leads to my parents bathroom. it's a jack and jill that leads into the master bedroom. i would love to know what the people who built this home were thinking with the bathrooms. my room has it's own bathroom but also is connected to my parents bathroom. i think my parent's loved it that my room was connected to theirs. it's probably the reason i did a lot less sneaking out than my brothers. ;)

this is a portrait of me when i was four.

you will notice that we all have christmas stockings tied to the foot of our beds. usually these stockings are hung from the mantle in the living room but because of the tour and the floral arrangements for the mantle, we hung them on our beds. 14 of the 16 were knit by my grandma. they are each different and make quite a statement when all 16 are hung around the mantle.

jamie's room:
this is my brother jamie's room. pretty much the only thing in this room that has stayed the same is the wallpaper. (notice the white holes in the wall next to the gun? read this post if you want to know why they're there.)

this desk and wall unit are amish made and were in my dad's office before he retired. this was the only wall in the whole house that was big enough for it.

kevin's room:
this is my brother kevin's room. originally, 100 years ago, it was the maid's room. i tried telling my brother that since he had the "maid's" room he had to be the maid. he was five years older than me; he didn't fall for it. the door you see to the left of the bed leads out to an adorable little balcony.

this room looks nothing like it did when my brother occupied it. back then it was grey and red with an Ohio State theme. it's the smallest of the three kid's bedrooms but i think it's always been the favorite.

this is another one of my great-grandma's quilts. it's the same pattern as the one in my room but looks completely different. isn't it just lovely?

my great-grandfather built this desk as a project for his high school shop class. can you believe that? i think at my high school people were making clocks and chalkboards in shop class.

two more rooms to go! next is the library-my favorite room in the whole house- and the master bedroom. until then...i hope you are having a fabulous christmas week!
