playroom goods: 3D magnetic bin numbers

i thought it would be fun to add a graphic punch in the playroom with numbers on the toy bins.

i liked the idea of the numbers being easily removable, so we can put the bins in proper order by simply moving the number and not the whole bin. wow, that sounds really lazy of us. now that i think of it, i'm not even sure why these bins need to be numbered or in proper order. oh, right...it's graphic and cute. good enough for me!

 {is anyone else slightly frightened by those barbie heads sticking out?}

i started with simple wood numbers from my local craft store.

hung the numbers on nails on a piece of plywood.

sprayed them with primer.

topped with white spray paint.

and yes, i had to flip the 5 and re-spray it, because apparently i don't know which way a 5 goes.

i bought this handy dandy adhesive magnetic tape at my local craft store. (which, by-the-way, isn't very "local". i live in a pretty sizable town and my closest big box craft store is a 20 minute drive. i know you are wondering how on earth i survive.)

 peel and stick.

put my coffee table books to use. (does anyone ever actually read those?)

and voila!

{these metal bins are from target, about 5 years ago. we will have them forever and always. love them.}

for the rest of the projects in this room, you can click on the brand new handy dandy tabs i added at the top of the blog, under the header. this is a new feature so please let me know if it isn't working correctly or if you can't find what you are looking for. thanks!

playroom goods: $25 restore bookshelf

you know how i love my local habitat for humanity restore...

...huge solid wood book shelf,

$25.00.

yes please!

this is the first time i have used zinsser primer. i did not want to have to sand this beast!

i loved the zinsser!

to read more about zinsser, check out paige's project, here.

one coat of primer and two coats of paint.

i applied the paint with a small foam roller. it was so much faster than a brush. i still had to use a brush for the nooks and crannies, but overall this project went pretty fast.

about 6 hours.

here are the results:

this bookshelf offers tons of storage for $25.

it's always nice to have a little help filling the bins and organizing everything.

it's amazing what a coat of white paint will do, isn't it?

to see the rest of the playroom go here.

monday i will show you how i made the 3D wood numbers that are on the bins.

have a safe and fun halloween weekend everyone!

playroom goods: $6 brass chandelier re-do

Here's a little something else you can do with a can of spray paint.

These builder's grade brass chandeliers are readily available.

Every time I go to my local thrift stores they are all over the place; typically $5-$10 each.

I found this one at Goodwill for $6.00.

I took the white plastic thingies and the brass cup thingies off.

Spray Paint LOVE!!!

Yep, this is pretty much the only way I will ever be utilizing our handy dandy chin-up bar.

And there you have it!

I also added cute little round light bulbs for fun. They really add some quirkiness to the chandi.

Spray painting these chandeliers is pretty easy. The hardest part is finding a place to hang it. I don't have a picture if it, but I use a tall plant hanger thing that stakes into the ground and has a hook. It's about 6 feet tall and works perfectly. Then I walk around the chandi spraying like a fool.

Note: Do not spray paint outside on a windy day. I learned this the hard way. Oh, and don't wear your favorite Coach sunglasses that you found at T.J.Maxx for a steal. You will reeeeeally regret that. Unless you like the idea of red speckled sunglasses.

I sprayed two or three coats. It dries fast. Hard. Smooth. Shiny. Love it.

playroom goods: before and after vintage school desk

i am so in love with old school desks. aren't you?
here is my vintage school desk before and after:

i loved the idea of an old school desk in the playroom.

i found this one at an antique store in ohio for around $70. not a steal but a fair price, i think.

here it is again:

so, it was a bit beat up in the original condition. i felt like it needed a nice clean start.

enter rustoleum red spray paint.

and there we have it. red.

the wood on the chairs was splitting a bit. i was worried about little bare legs sliding on and off and the risk of splinters. so i decided to cover the wood. this will protect it from further damage as well.

i started with white canvas.
.
.
.
traced.

and traced.

added seam allowance.

cut two.

cut the chevron fabric.

pinned.

made piping.
.
.
.
sewed piping.
.
.
.
cut ruffles.
.
.
.
pinned ruffles.

stitched.

added ribbon.

and voila!

it's been a few months and this little set up has held up quite well! i stitched a little velcro around the legs under the seat cover. that helps keep the seat covers in place while those little legs are scooting on and off.

one more thing....RUSTOLEUM ROCKS!

God goods: an artist's prayer

{from the book:   200 pomegranates and an audience of one   by shawn wood}

*
"God, i pray that you would remind me that you created me for a life of meaning and influence, ultimately to bring you fame.

I pray that you would continue this work in me and hone my skills, talents, and spiritual gifts in such a way that you would be honored by my greatness.

As i walk in this journey, God, I pray that you would show me what to do, teaching me what the passion of my life should be.  Along that journey, I pray that you would allow me to have the courage and the integrity to do something meaningful with my life.

Lord, teach me to see the needs of others as you see them, and to invest in your other people your prized possessions. When I do this, I pray that it would be a beacon that shines on you.

God, as i do these things I pray that you would be my audience. That my love and adoration would be for you and that you alone would get my praise.

And lastly, God, allow me the grace to finish the race well. I look forward to seeing you and hearing you say, "Well done." Lord, give me your strength to finish strong in Jesus' name. Amen."
